As the recession takes hold it would appear that the willingness to pay over the odds to so-called ‘designer brands’ for IT services is a thing of the past as firms turn to mid-tier suppliers for value and service.

Sami Saoudi, Opeartions Director of MMCC Consultants said, “A lot of corporations are shunning the big conglomerates like IBM and HP in favour of the technology and services of niche IT suppliers offering tailor-made application software. Companies that were once keen to display the names of the big boys are now looking to companies that offer better value for money and the same, if not better, customer service.”

While large corporations hit by the recession look for ways to cut-back, there has also been a surge in demand from smaller firms.

Sami continued, “It is not only the large corporations that need the services provided by IT software developers. Hundreds of small firms also need custom-made applications to assist their day-to-day running and client management. This is a part of the industry where the larger IT corporations have never held much weight, churning out off-the-shelf applications rather than bespoke packages.”

It would seem that the mid-tier IT development companies have targeted this niche market making it affordable for smaller firms. Alongside the recession and the choices of smaller corporations affecting the IT market, firms are also realising that the large suppliers do not have a monopoly on quality and service, far from it with many of them distracted by next quarter’s figures and forgetting about the needs of the client.

“Smaller firms know that customer service is paramount,” said Sami, “We may not be a world-recognised brand like IBM, but what we do have is an honest and open way of doing business which puts our clients’ needs first.”

It appears that the search for value and service instead of designer branding is leading to a new and exciting age for niche IT suppliers as a lasting result of the recession.
